The Richmond Playwright's Forum has been in existence since 1995, when a small group interested in the art of dramatic writing got together under the auspices of the Barksdale Theatre and started the Forum for the purpose of encouraging and supporting the writing of plays, and providing an environment in which to present of their works for the purposes of hearing, developing and critiquing each other's works. Plays, unlike other forms of literature, need the embodiment of actors, sets and costumes to make them come alive. We try to help the writer flesh out his creation.

Membership in the Richmond Playwright's Forum is open to anyone who writes drama, is interested in writing drama, and to those who would like to assist by taking part in the readings or the critical discussions. There is a membership fee of $25.00 per year, payable before April 1 of each year. You may attend up to three times for free before deciding to become a paying member.

News about Members: Member Mary Kay Williams will have four of her plays performed as staged readings for the Acts of Faith Festival Fringe on successive Wednesdays in March at St. Paul's Episopal in downtown Richmond! Last October Janet Chenoweth's new play "Olives on the Front Porch " was performed by The Bifocals Theatre, a branch of the Barksdale that focuses on seniors. A full-length musical by Rebecca Jones entitled, "Hearts Online" has been in development for a few years and was presented for a sellout crowd at the Firehouse Theatre August 14 & 15th. Margie Langston's one-act comedy "Luau at Acorn Acres" was produced by the Bifocals Theatre last June and has just been accepted for publication by JAC Publishing.
